Live updates on the situation between Russia and Ukraine: Griner has been sent to a penal colony

More than six months after Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of the neighbouring Ukraine, the two nations are engaged in a war for control of eastern and southern regions of Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has vowed to reclaim all Russian-occupied territory. His soldiers launched an operation in August. However, Putin ordered in September a mobilisation of reservists, which is anticipated to call up to 300,000 additional troops.

The White House condemns the transfer of Griner to a prison camp.

Brittney Griner, the WNBA star jailed in Russia, has been relocated to a correctional camp, a move that White House officials have condemned.

"Every minute of Brittney Griner's unlawful detention in Russia is a minute too long," said White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre in a statement released early Wednesday morning. "While the Administration continues to fight relentlessly to achieve her release, the President has ordered the Administration to persuade her Russian captors to improve her treatment and the conditions she may be forced to suffer in a penal colony,"

The lawyers, Blagovolina and Alexander Boykov, said in a statement, "We have no knowledge regarding her precise current location or her final destination." "According to regular Russian practise, the attorneys and the U.S. Embassy must be informed of her arrival at her destination."

The White House stated that it has made a "substantial offer" to Russian officials in an effort to "resolve the current unacceptable and unjust detentions of American citizens."

"Despite a lack of good faith negotiation by the Russians, the U.S. Government has continued to follow up on this offer and provide alternate potential paths ahead to the Russians via all available channels," Jean-Pierre said in a statement.

She said, "The U.S. Government's dedication to its work on behalf of Brittney and other Americans jailed in Russia — including fellow unjust inmate Paul Whelan — is unshakable."

Moscow asserts that it is 'monitoring' the midterm US elections.

According to Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko, Moscow is closely "watching" the midterm elections in the United States and is aware that some Republican candidates have recommended cutting the country's military funding to Ukraine.

Grushko said in an interview with the Russian state-owned television network Zvezda on Tuesday, "Naturally, we're following the happenings in the United States." "We are aware that a number of prominent Republicans are in favour of decreasing military aid to Ukraine on the grounds that what Democrats are currently doing is unreasonable."

Grushko stated that if the Republicans win, the U.S. Congress could increase pressure on European nations' defence budgets.
